Text: James 5:16-18

Theme: The Four Keys to Power in Prayer.

Take-Away-Point: For Effective Results, Pray Earnestly, Be Specific.

Let me start with the disclaimer.  “Your prayers are not answered or are answered because of the length/amount of time you spend in praying. No! No!  That is not how God operates.  You can pray for 5mins, 10mins, 30mins, or even an hour or more.  God is the One that decides on whose prayer to answer. 

Four Keys or Principles to Power in Prayer:

“16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.” (NKJV).

1.     You Have to Pray & Be Specific in Your Prayer (vs 17).

2.     Pray Earnestly: The second principle of the Four Keys to Power in Prayer is to Pray Earnestly (vs 17a). 

3.     You Must Be Clean (vs 16a):  We must pay attention to the advice in James 5:16a “Confess your faults one to another” – It means to come clean before our God.  We serve a Holy God who will Not tolerate any form of evil. 

4.     Be Persistent (vs 18a): we see this in our text.  First, Elijah prayed earnestly, secondly 18a And he prayed again (Persistent). 

Please read up the following Bible Verses on your own (1 Kings 17:1, 1 Kings 18:41-46, Luke 18:1-8 ).

Charles Spurgeon in a sermon he preached on October 1, 1882 made this statement, “He who prays without fervency does not pray at all. We cannot commune with God, who is a consuming fire, if there is no fire in our prayers. Many prayers fail of their errand because there is no faith in them. Prayers which are filled with doubt, are requests for refusal. Imagine that you wrote to a friend and said, “Dear friend, I am in great trouble, and therefore tell you, and ask for your help, because it seems right to do so. But though I thus write, I have no belief that you will send me any help; indeed, I should be mightily surprised if you did, and should speak of it as a great wonder.”

PRAYER POINTS:

1.     Ask the Lord to Keep you clean.  Please “Do Not Walk Out Those Doors If You Are Not Clean With God today.”  
2.     Ask God for one Specific need for Hope Church today. Be earnest and persistent.
3.     Personal Prayers (Ask God for one Specific need today for you and your entire family, be Earnest and be persistent.)
