John 6:1-10

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival was near.

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).

Text: John 6:1-10

Title: Nothing Is Impossible with God

This story in John 6:1-15 highlights how Jesus’ power, his compassion and care for all those that come to seek him.  This encourages us to always trust and depend on Him for our daily needs.

In feeding over five thousand people in Galilee, Jesus once again proved that Nothing is Impossible with God, the king of kings.  I want to pinpoint three key elements in this passage that I think will encourage us as we grow in our faith:

  • Jesus’ Grace and Goodness Attracts (vs 1-2).  In Acts of the Apostle 10:38, we read about Peter’s greatest sermon on the day of Pentecost and what he said about the Messiah “And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”

This was the mission of Jesus to the world.  Jesus came to do good; he came to heal the sick physically and spiritually, Jesus came to deliver those held in Satan’s captivity and oppression, Jesus came for us to have redemption from the chains of sin.  So, everywhere he went, multitudes of people followed him to hear his teachings and to be delivered from their life challenges.

As believers, if we show grace to people, if we are kind and loving to people, if we act like Jesus did to people, they are bound to follow us and expand God’s kingdom here on earth

  • Nothing Is Impossible with God (vs 7) In verse 7 which was Philips response to Jesus, Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.”  In a nutshell, Philip limited God by saying that it was impossible to feed the large crowd of people.  But Jesus proved him wrong because their absolutely nothing impossible with our God.  As you go out this week, trust in the Savoir Jesus to help you accomplish what might appear impossible for you to accomplish.  Surrender it all to Jesus.

  • God Deserves our Gratitude (vs 11).  Jesus taught his disciples then and is teaching us today the high importance of been thankful and grateful to God in all situations.  With Just 5 loaves of bread and two small fishes, the first thing Jesus did on receiving them was to give thanks to God as was written in verse 11a of our text which reads “And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks.” Jesus first gave thanks before distributing the items to his disciples for onward distributions to the crowd.

Thanksgiving and gratitude are key elements in our relationship and walk with God.  1 Thessalonians 5:18"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you"

I wish you a meaningful week, as you go out with a heart of gratitude and thanksgiving and the willingness to do good in the life of someone this week.

God bless you.
