John 17:20-26

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

TEXT: John 17:20-26
Theme: Jesus Intercessory Prayer Believers.
Take-Away-Point: May Jesus Love Unite Us.

Our passage is broken down into the following units:

1. Jesus Prays for Future Believers (vs 20): “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,”

I am thankful and rejoice in the fact that our Savior did not just pray for His eleven disciples, but he also prayed for you and I and all future believers.  This was a prayer of certainty.  He knew that many more would hear the good news of the Gospel message and would turn their lives to Christ that was why He prayed thus “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,”

2. Jesus Prayed for the Unity of the Church (vs 21):“that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

The unity of the church is of paramount importance because no house that is divided against itself can survive or make progress.

A united church is a menace and threat to Satan and the kingdom of darkness therefore it behoves all followers of Christ to see ourselves as one and not allow us to be caught in the evil spell of denominations that Satan is using to cause divisions in the body of Christ.

3. Jesus Prayed for God’s Glory and Love (vs 22-23): “22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

Brethren, it is out of the unconditional love of God that He sent Jesus into the world for our Redemption and Salvation so that no one that believes in Jesus will perish as we read in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” It is so amazing and chilling to know that Jesus prayed and gave us the same glory that God the Father gave Him.  We are more than blessed to have such a loving Father.

4. Jesus Prayed for Believers to Enter into His Presence in Heaven (vs 24-26): Jesus concludes the prayer session as He began it, as He addressed God the Father by name (see John 17:1, John 17:11).

In verse 25, Jesus referred to God as Righteous Father, indeed, no other god, or religion has the bragging rights to a Righteous Father who can bring all faithful believers to spend eternity in Heaven with the Risen Savior as confirmed by Paul the apostle in Ephesians 2:6 “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,”

As you go out this week, go in the love and glory of God that Jesus our Savior has bestowed on us.

Until I come your way next time, I wish you a meaningful week.

Yours-in-Christ
