Text: Haggai 1:7-15
Theme: Make God’s Work and His Service Your Priority (Part 2)
Take-Away-Point: God Calls for a Drought on our Land when we neglect Him.
7 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord. 9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11 I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.” 12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord. 13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with you,” declares the Lord. 14 So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PASSAGE:
1. A Call to Examine Oneself (vs 7b) - (“Give careful thought to your ways.”). (see Psalm 51:3-4).
2. A Command to Build (vs 8) – (“Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,”). (Please see Ephesians 2:21, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 2 Corinthians 6:16, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 2 Corinthians 7:1, Romans 12:1).
In God’s kingdom, He wants us to be active participants – God wants our involvement. (see Matthew 28:18-20) In God’s kingdom, He wants us to be active participants – God wants our involvement.
3. The Price of Disobedience (vs 9-11) - (brings drought, lack, scarcity, deficiency). God’s original plan and design for humanity is for us to live in the abundance of His blessings (see 3 John 1:2, Proverbs 10:22, Proverbs 3:9-10, Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” ).
But our disobedience to God and His instructions, brings drought, lack, scarcity, and deficiency to man.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION ON MAKING GOD OUR PRIORITY:
Making God our priority gives us the opportunity to learn more about His character and purpose for our lives. God will reveal Himself to us through the study of His word. He will teach us how to be like Him in our conducts, actions, choices, in our relationship with one another, it will build our faith, trust, and obedience. When we sincerely place God in the first position in our lives, we feel and have a new awareness of His Divine presence.
William Carey had a maxim which states “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Ask the Lord to Keep you clean (start by “Giving careful thought to your ways.” ). Please “Do Not Walk Out Those Doors If You Are Not Clean With God today.”
