Luke 18:18-30
18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’ 21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said. 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 When he heard this, he became very sad How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?” 27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!” 29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
TEXT: LUKE 18:18-30
Theme: Nothing Should Hinder You from Following Jesus.
Take-Away Point: Christ Is Calling You Today Make Up Your Mind and Follow Him.
Once again, Jesus continues to teach His disciples on what it will take to qualify us to inherit the Kingdom of God. From this passage, Jesus made it clear that “No one is good—except God alone” This simply means that Christ our Savior is the only one who has the bragging rights to be called good. Remember that Jesus is the same with God the Father in John 1:1-2 the Bible stated that “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.”
Our ‘good works’, acts of kindness, love to our neighbors, charity deeds, gentleness and so on do not qualify us to be called good, so, no one should boost.
Jesus told the young ruler in verse 22b of text “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” The question we should ask ourselves this morning is this, what is that thing or habit that is too difficult for us to sell or let go and follow the Lord Jesus 100%?
The point is this, Jesus should come first, Jesus must be the priority in all we do. If we put Jesus in second place and allow our ambitions, career, political interests, our relationships, our spouses or whatever the case maybe above Jesus Christ, that is a very big problem. In Deuteronomy 8:18 the Lord made it clear that “You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
Following Jesus faithfully comes with a price Eternal Life as Jesus confirmed in verses 29-30 29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
My prayer for you this week is that Nothing Should Hinder You from Following Jesus today. Today, Make God First in All you do.
I wish you a meaningful week.
Yours-in-Christ
David Kachi Jite
