John 7:37-39
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

TEXT: John 7:37-39
Theme: Jesus Invitation to Salvation.
Take Home Point: Accept the Invitation and Trust in The Holy Spirit of God.
The occasion was the last day of “The Feast of Tabernacles" which lasted eight days. The Jews celebrated this festival annually as a constant reminder of how God miraculously provided water to the people of Israel during their sojourn in the wilderness.
Jesus chooses the last day of this event to extend an invitation to salvation to anyone who would heed His call and believe in Him as the Messiah. Today, this invitation is still open to anyone irrespective of your race, nationality, political stand, class, your intelligence or non-intelligence, it doesn’t matter. All that truly matters is for you to confess your wrong doings to Him, believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. To drink from Jesus Christ simply means to put our faith in Him; to trust in Him, it means to rely on him, and to cling onto Jesus as the author and finisher of our faith.”
As we believe in Jesus and put all our faith in Him, God’s promise in Isaiah 44:3 will become our testimony. It tells us that God will be with us during our times of distress; it tells us that God’s Presence and love will provide spiritual nourishment and guidance for us as He stands with us during such times:
Isaiah 44:3 “For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
In verse 39b of our text, we find a very important piece of information that a lot of modern-day Christians seem to undermine or overlook. Work and Presence of the Holy Spirit. John recorded that “By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.” The early Christians had not received the Holy Spirit because Jesus had not paid the supreme price at the Cross, Jesus had not been glorified (see Jesus’ instructions to His disciples in Acts 1:4-5, 8).
To abide and live an abundant life in Jesus comes in and through the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. To undermine the Work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian is akin (similar) to playing with fire. I like what Charles Spurgeon said about the Works of the Holy Spirit:
“It is a blessed thing to preach the work of Jesus Christ, but it is an evil thing to omit the work of the Holy Ghost; for the work of the Lord Jesus itself is no blessing to that man who does not know the work of the Holy Spirit.” (Charles Spurgeon).
As you accept Jesus’ invitation to salvation today, trust in the leading, guidance, and the wise counsel of the Holy Spirit of God.
I wish you a meaningful week.
